Ethics and Politics: Why the Blanket Question Is the Wrong One

A debate framed as a yes-or-no question—does ethics belong in politics?—turns out to rest on a hidden ambiguity: 'ethics' is not one thing. Untangling descriptive from normative, individual from social, maximal from minimal, and absolutist from contextualist ethics reveals which kind actually has the standing to judge law, national interest, and power itself.
